As you all know I love me some Super Heroes. I love comics, cartoons, and I love movies. Well I'm thinking we can offically call next year the year of the Super Hero. In February of next year it kicks things off with Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence; now I will say I was only so-so on the first movie, it looked great, but overall was pretty weak. I hope for a lot from the sequel. In March we have Hansel and Gretle-Witch Hunters and the Clash of the titan sequel. I don't know if you can technically count either of them as super heroes being as I have no idea what the Witch Hunters movie will be like, and the Clash of the Titans remake was God-Aweful (forgive the pun).
However, on May 4th we get the Avengers; this film will set the tone for the rest of the Super Hero films that year. This film needs to be knock your socks off epic in order to be worthy of being made; you don't gather up all those super heroes and have them spend their time talking. We need to see live-action super hero stuff like it has never been done. After this movie is released it has to be so great that it sends every other production racing back to do emergency reshoots, because they pale in comparison to what has been released. Later that month were supposed to get a Men in Black III; I like the MIB films, but the second film did fall short of the original. I hope this films steps up and helps redeem the franchise.
In June we got Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, are we seeing a pattern here...witch hunters...vampire hunters. I'll give this movie the pass; Dan read the book the film is based on and said it was pretty good. Also that month we get the Star Trek sequel; maybe they'll go back in time to save Vulcan only to watch it blow up again and the Trekkies can cry about that some more. I loved the reboot of the franchise and hope the sequel carries its momentum.
July will be another powerhouse super hero month with the Spider-Man reboot kicking off the July 4th weekend. While I don't think a reboot is necessary and feel they should have just cast a new Peter Parker and moved on, I am interested in seeing what this film has to offer. I just hope this film isn't overshadowed by the apparent miserable failings of Spider-Man-Turn Off the Dark and get overlooked. I'd still like to see that musical just to form my own opinion; anyone want to get me some tickets? Moving on, at the end of that month we get the "final chapter" of Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. Hands down, what makes these films work is attention to character, not plot details. His ability to really bring these character's traits to life on screen is great, I'm anxious to see what he has in store for his finale.
In August we get to shout "Yo Joe!" once again as we get sequel to GI Joe. I didn't think the first film was going to be anything but a huge turd, but after watching it, I found I had a lot of fun. It's not a great movie, but it is a good popcorn flick, and durring the summer season, that's what people are looking for.
Fortunately, or unfortunately as I look at it, in September of next year we're supposed to get another Resident Evil sequel. Yeah, more Super Alice. I've never enjoyed the Resident Evil films, due to the fact that they strayed so far and away from the source material. I really don't know what people see in these movies and I'm surprised they've lasted long enough to get a fifth film. You can't deny the fact that Alice does have Super-Uber powers and abilities, so I guess she bears mentioning on this list.
October doesn't have any offers, not even another Saw film has been anounced yet...thankfully. So we'll move right on to November when everyone's favorite British secret agent takes to the screen again. There aren't many details, if any, about what's in store for this Bond film, but I imagine we'll be hearing more about as the year moves on. Also that month we're supposed to get Rise of the Gaurdians, it's a Dreamworks animated feature about a bunch of people with special abilities taking on a villian that calls itself Pitch. Sounds interesting enough to get this comic nerd to at least watch a trailer.
We round out our 2012 with the first film of the Hobbit series, directed again by Peter Jackson. I have faith that he will do a good job with the material. And last, but not least, we get Zach Snyder's Superman reboot. I'm very much looking forward to this film too. Zach Snyder has always taken care of the fans by giving them incredibly faithful adaptaions of comic inspired works. Superman needs Zach. Hopefully all of these films will be released before the December 21st, because around or just after that date, the world is supposed to end in some horrible crazy fashion. Funny, you'd think in the year 2012 they'd have a movie about the end of the world, but they don't. Weird.
