Tales From the Controller

Just gonna share a few thoughts on the game I'm playing. Started playing the game Dragon Age Origins for the X-Box and at first it I wasn't a fan on the combat, but as I've gotten a few hours in to the game I'm enjoying the overall mechanics. I'm enjoying all the different response options in conversations and those answers changing the attitude and response other characters give you. The story seems pretty interesting, I'm playing through the game as a human warrior, so I'm uncertain how the story progresses through other options, but I'm intereted in seeing what part my character will play in the things to come.

More thoughts on this in the weeks to come.

Has anyone out there played through this game? What are your thoughts?

Tuesday Tip of the Week

Today's Tip-Be Flexible. Hardly seems noteworthy of mentioning when you're running a role-playing game; it should be a given that situations shouldn't have a fixed outcome. But I've run in to the problem before. Had a GM that would set a problem/situation before the group and then stand back and listen to us wrack our brains and debate the possible solutions. When we finally decided on a course of action they'd tell us that it wasn't going to work for whatever reason, so then we'd go to our second choice. Nope. Third choice? No dice. Something rediculous? Nada. Whether it was their intention to shoot down all our initial idea just to force us to think longer, and waste more game time trying to figure out the one, and apparently, only solution they had in mind I'll never know. The game play suffered however, because it felt like we were rats and there was only one solution to whatever maze of logic the GM had decided on (or come up with on the fly).

The whole point of running a role-playing game is you get to choose your own destiny. Games on rails aren't fun; they're great for beginners, but as you become a more experienced player, they lose their luster quick. Rather than shoot down player ideas to a situation, let them live by their decisions. It makes for a lot of fun.

Tales From the Controller

Taking a break from my regular tales from the table segment to talk a little bit about video games. Recieved an X-Box 360 for Christmas and have since completed 2 games for it. The first I completed is Batman Arkham Asylum, which overall I give a solid B rating for a game. The graphics are great, the controls for the most part are pretty fluid and smooth and it does give you a good idea what it feels like to be the Dark Knight. But why with all the acclaim for this game could I only give it a B? Well first and foremost were the games challenges. Many of the Boss battles and encounters follow the very first Titan fueled mini-boss encounter in the game. Basically a big hulking guy roars, charges you down, you batarang them in the head to stun them, then beat on them til the recover. This style boss battle repeats itself with minor variation at least four times durring the game. The final boss battle with the Joker is probably the biggest let down of the entire game, it's a weak sauce ending for such an epic struggle and it doesn't live up to the rest of the game.

My other gripes about the game are more geek oriented and have to do with Batman's overall limitations. The biggest problem I had was he wasn't very bullet proof; machine guns and snipers tear you a new butthole in this game. I don't know how many times I've seen batman raise his cape up and over himself to repel bullets. Having this as a defence would have been nice. Batman could also have employed some smoke pellets. There were pleanty of points in the game were creating a disorienting smoke cloud would have been great for taking out thugs, especially machine guns. I felt having doors being "locked" or "blocked" was a weak reason to create more searching for the inevitable vent you'd need to climb through. He had an unlimited supply of explosive gel; Why not just blow crap off their hinges. Someone said, well that's not stealthy; well Batmas is stealthy, but he's also theatrical and intimidating. Blowing a door off its hinges and then laying in wait for scared thugs to come and investigate, and then take them out seems to be more of Batman's style.

Overall the game was pretty enjoyable and I like that they employed many of the voice actors from the animated series; it gave it that little something extra.

Now the second game I completed is a bit old, but one I really wanted to play and that was Fable II. I remember watching commercials about choosing your path and being evil or good and all that kind of free enviornment stuff. Well the game was highly disappointing, and has probably one of the worst endings I've ever seen in a game. A quick rundown of the story is as follows. You're a kid that lives as an orphan in this big city with your sister. You run around doing odd-jobs for people and you final earn this magic box that is supposed to grant wishes. Your sister wishes that the two of you could live in this great castle, and the lord of that castle discovers you have the wishing box and then tells you that wishes could come true for you. He takes you to his lab in the castle and you learn that he has great magical power aspirations and he then discovers that you and your sister could be part of a prophecy that could keep him from his destiny. He then shoots your sister and then you. You some how survive the ordeal and are raised by a mysterious blind woman who wants to guide you to your destiny of find the three heroes necessary to defeat the evil bad guy in his evil magical spire he's constructing.

She guides you to different places where you find tasks and missions to help you gain the strength, agility, and willpower (Fighting skill, shooting skill, and magic skill) to exact you own justice against your evil foe. Long story short, you finally get to the guy who has your three hero friends and is draining them of power. You stop him from do it in what is pretty much an in game cinematic. He then tells you to prepare yourself and that he's going to kill you. Your character then immediately pulls out their gun. Well at this point in the game, I didn't want to use my gun; my melee and magic skills were far superior. So I tried to blast him with my magic, which just stopped working for no explained reason. So then I pulled out my hammer, and even though the bad guy was only one step away, I could get close enough to hit him with it. So then I pushed my gun button, fired it once, and killed the ultimate bad guy. One shot. Dead. He falls off his little step and down in to the spire, and the game moves on to giving you your final gift of one of three wishes.

What kind of shitty boss battle is that?! You spend the whole game building up and doing everything necessary to prepare yourself to fight this guy who has a powerful army at his command and has enslaved hundreds of people to build this sprire, and he goes down with a single shot. It was weak, it was worse than a disappointment, and I feel robbed of the time I spent playing the game. Overall I give the game a D-. It doesn't live up to what it promises in almost any way.

If you have any thoughts on these games or any other games. Share them with us in our comments section.

Welcome to week two of our Star Storm adventure. Our inept, intrepid crew of space adventurers have their quest to retrieve the rare and precious alloy known as Silvanium (although they refer to it as unobtanium). They're under way and navigating the drift, and the looter/salvagers in them might just veer them off course. They need to be careful, otherwise they just might find themselves one of The Damn Undead!

Things to appologise for:

Everything? We're so sorry! lol. Actually I've noticed I'm kind of hard to hear, tried to fix it the best I could. Sorry for my mumblings.

The In-Jokes:

Rolling 5 or less-We have a house rule that if you roll 5 our less while shooting/attacking in to melee where your friends are engaged with the same target, you have to roll again. If your 2nd roll is enough to hit you friend, they take the blow. There are a lot of situationals and whatevers that can and do alter the rule, but this is enough to give you the idea of what it is we're talking about.

Is your name Hamman?-We have a friend whose last name is Hamman and when he played with us years ago, he played a witch. He would always do the most foolhardy crazy things with her. He'd charge her in to melee combat with two daggers because he was afraid of "wasting spells". Yeah it was like that. It seemed the only time he ever used his spells was to piss off party members.

Welcome back everyone, this is Coarey for the GameKnights. Now I know the end of last weeks show had to hit you all pretty hard learning that my character, Slystorm, died. And as you'll be able to tell from listening to this weeks pod, my death was a blow to the party as well. If you can't taste the sarcasm yet you must be dead. They don't care at all about my death; they only want to know what they can loot from my corpse for themselves! Bastards! So have a listen and find out who receives the Dead Man's Gauntlets!

Nothing to apologize for and no in-jokes for this episode. If I'm mistaken, drop me a line.

Tales From the Table

What kind of character's do you usually enjoy playing? Myself, I really enjoy warriors in just about any game; I think everyone really likes to klick some ass and take names. My characters usually wind up being a bit mouthy as well. I guess I'm force to bite my tongue enough in every day life that when I start playing, eventually, I get pretty sarcastic. I also like playing some more odd-ball characters like kids, elderly people, or strange alternative races. My friends will also say that I like to min/max my character pretty hard. Like in Serenity I sacrifice being able to take much if any damage to have some really high skills in piloting, surgery, and mechanics. Some GM's really get bent out of shape when a playing does things like that with their character, but I just see it as making the best character I can, and hopefully through advancement, I can improve them in places where they're lacking.

What kind of characters do you enjoy playing. Leace us a comment and let us know.

Hello everyone, Coarey here for the GameKnights! If you're not sure what this weeks title refers to, it basically this: Don't give something so dangerous to someone so irresponsible. There is an item amongst a party that is the gun and one of us is the baby. Who is it? Come along and find out why we Don't Give the Gun to the Baby!

Things to apologize for:
Nothing really jumps to mind. Maybe some minor sound issues, but if you've made it this far, you're used to that.

The In-Jokes
Joe fixing something at Dan's- This really isn't an in-joke, but when you hear Justin talk about putting his fist through a wall or something like that and Dan say no I just fixed one thing today ect...
Dan had some plumbing break the night before and he and Joe fixed it that day. That's pretty much it.

Tales From the Table

What are some of you role-playing alternatives? For us it's usually a network strategy game like Command and Conquer or a FPS like FEAR Combat. They're a nice distraction. Often times well play some kind of board or card game like Talisman, Inn Fighting, Red Dragon Inn, and of course Munchkin. I like a competitive game myself with a strategic element. I really enjoy the idea of games like Warhammer 40k, but with those particular games you better have packed a lunch and dinner, because they take forever to setup and play. I don't know if it's just the people I play with, but it seems like 40k people fall in L-O-V-E with scenery. Good GOD! I've played on tables eight plus feet long, laden with intricate scenery and obsticles and the armies, of course, starting at opposing ends of the field. I don't understand why; aren't we supposed to be fighting? It's takes the better part of an hour or so just to get my units in to shooting range.

What are some of your gaming distractions from your weekly game?
